Brazil’s least favourite sons, Nelson Piquet Snr and Nelson Piquet Jr have launched a libel law suit against former Renault F1 Team Principal Flavio Briatore.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the pair is seeking some £200,000 is damages from Flavio – who also acted as Nelsinho’s manager during his brief stint in F1 – who has been summoned to appear in London’s High Court.

The ridiculous lawsuit centres around the ‘Crashgate’ scandal, where Piquet Jr it is alleged that deliberately crashed his Renault at the 2008 Singapore GP as part of a team strategy to benefit the sister car of Fernando Alonso. After being sacked from Renault for some crap performances, Nelsinho threw a tantrum blew the whistle on his former employers and brought the entire saga to an ugly head.

At the centre of the court claim is a September-dated press release, in which Renault accuses both Piquets of providing false information to the FIA and attempting to blackmail the team.

The press release also made threats that both the team and Briatore would criminally pursue the Piquets.

When it emerged that indeed Nelsinho’s allegations actually had some merit, Renault responded by sacking Briatore and the team’s Technical Director, Pat Symonds.

Thus far, neither the team nor Briatore has made any attempt to apologise for the allegations, although the threats of criminal pursuit where withdrawn.

The Piquets’ lawyer, Dominic Crossley, told reporters: "Given Renault F1’s failure to accept the Piquets’ invitation to withdraw the allegations and apologise, they feel they have no other choice but to demonstrate the falsity of these allegations in court.”

And there we all were praying that this ridiculous saga had been put to bed!
