On The Edge: My Story, by Richard Hammond
Paperback, © 2008 Phoenix, ISBN 9780753824047

On The EdgeTop Gear fans will recall the news in 2006 when co-presenter Richard Hammond crashed heavily while piloting a jet car, suffering catastrophic head injuries that could have robbed him of his life and his livelihood.

On The Edge is Hammond’s account of life before and after his accident, with a warts and all description of the good, bad and ugly of his road to recovery.

Born a true adrenalin junkie, he tells of his life growing up trying stunts on his bicycle to the development of his passion for motoring. His graduation for local radio jobs to TV is also covered, and you truly get an insight as to the workings of the man and the show that has made him so famous.

And then came that crash that could have ended it all. His wife Mindy takes over the narrative after the crash and described his long road to recovery, the watching and waiting until he eventually emerged from his coma. The battles he had to remember anything, let alone reassemble the personality that was intrinsically him. The mystery that is the head injury certainly left everyone wondering if the same man could ever be found amidst the shattering of his mind after the crash.

It is an incredibly powerful and emotional book to read, and fans of the show will know that Hammond made a complete and miraculous recovery, returning in full glory to the show. This is a must-read for fans of the show, but even non-fans will take plenty away after riding the waves of his journey to recovery.
