Bruno Spengler

Bruno Spengler has headed a Mercedes-Benz 1-2 in qualifying for tomorrow’s DTM race at the Eurospeedway Lausitz, after clinching his third pole position in the four races of the season to-date.

The Canadian cruised into the final top-four qualifying shoot-out, and he was set a tough task to claim pole after Mattias Ekström took provisional pole with his one-lap effort.

But Spengler showed his true class once again with a scintillating effort, with his 1:19.119 almost half a second faster than the Swede had managed in his Audi. The result was then sealed when Spengler’s HWA team-mate Jamie Green completed the front row with his own single flying lap.

Ekström will share the second row of the grid with Martin Tomczyk – fastest in final practice before qualifying – who is currently Audi’s best-placed driver in the championship, an effort all the more remarkable when one acknowledges that he’s running in the older-spec A4 chassis.

Gary Paffett just missed out on a berth in the top-four shootout, and he will start from fifth place, alongside Oliver Jarvis.

Stand-in for the injured Mike Rockenfeller, Tom Kristensen acquitted himself very well – after going a surprise quickest in the first practice session yesterday – and he will start from seventh place.

Filipe Albuquerque starts from a career-best eighth place in his older-spec Rosberg Audi, while the top-ten is completed by Timo Scheider and Christian Vietoris.

The opening phase of qualifying was a particularly tightly-fought affair, with drivers hoping to avoid an early bath needing to lap within 0.4 seconds of the session’s pace-setter, Edoardo Mortara.

This proved too much of a gap for both former F1 drivers David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher, who failed to make it past Q1 and will start well down the order, equalling the same 17th place on the grid he achieved here last year.
