The tiresome debate over the exhaust rules continues

A Red Bull 2-1 in qualifying for the British Grand Prix (certainly on the basis of team sentiment in its Austrian quarters) was far from being the major talking point of the weekend, as tears and tantrums over the ‘exhaust blowing’ fiasco continued to rumble on.

And now the FIA has found yet another way to undermine its own credibility by offering the teams an olive branch by proposing to scrap its controversial mid-season clampdown on exhaust-blown diffusers.

The build-up to yesterday’s qualifying session was highly-charged, with the sport’s heavy hitters – Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari – engaged in a tit-for-tat battle over the exact speculation of how much each team would benefit (or suffer) under the recently-imposed rules that severely limited off-throttle exhaust blowing when the cars were braking or cornering.

The speculation could be completely academic by the next race in Germany in a fortnight’s time, with the FIA now proposing to end its complicated debate by allowing teams to revert to the pre-Silverstone rules before the devices are banned entirely in the off-season.

“If the teams are in unanimous agreement [to the rules reversion], the FIA is prepared to adopt this arrangement until the end of the current season,” a statement from the sport’s governing body reads.
