Craig Lowndes claimed his third pole of the 2011 V8 Supercars season

Craig Lowndes has finally broken Mark Winterbottom’s stranglehold on pole position, qualifying fastest for today’s second race of the V8 Supercars Sucrogen Townsville 400.

The Triple 8 Engineering driver took his third pole of the season after clocking an impressive 1:12.8533 lap time in his Holden Commodore to take spot from Winterbottom’s Ford by three-tenths of a second.

Having impressively charged to the lead of Race 1 on soft tyres, David Reynolds took a career-best third-fastest in his Kelly Racing Holden, one spot ahead of yesterday’s Race 1 victor Garth Tander (TOLL HRT).

Winterbottom’s team-mate Will Davison qualified fifth-fastest in the sister Ford, and he’ll no doubt be hoping to claim back-to-back podium finishes. He shares the third row of the grid with Jason Bright, who showed much improved qualifying pace in his Brad Jones Racing Holden.

Championship leader Jamie Whincup had a poor qualifying session by his standards, lining up eighth for today’s 72-lap race.
