Team Vodafone looks to be the benchmark team at Phillip Island

Will Davison and Jamie Whincup have claimed respective pole positions for today’s two sprint races that will serve to determine the grid for tomorrow’s L&H 500 race, the first endurance race of this year’s V8 Supercars championship.

The grid for tomorrow’s main race is determined by the results of today’s two short sprint races, with each car’s driver pairing – this being the first weekend where the endurance round co-drivers get to race – participating in one of the qualifying and race sessions each.

Qualifying for the first sprint race saw Ford Performance Racing’s Will Davison claim pole from Triple 8 Holden driver Craig Lowndes; Davison’s best lap of 1:33.1874 edged out Lowndes (who took a clean sweep of wins at the last championship round at Queensland Raceway) by just 0.0022 seconds!

Andrew Thompson – co-driver for Lowndes’ team-mate and championship leader Jamie Whincup – was third-fastest, followed by Michael Caruso (GRM Holden), John McIntyre (Stone Brothers Ford) and David Reynolds (Kelly Racing Holden).

Times for the second sprint race’s qualifying session were quicker than the first session, with Whincup claiming pole with a 1:32.6904, edging out Shane van Gisbergen (Stone Brothers Ford) by over a quarter of a second.

Mark Skaife – the V8 Supercars veteran driving the Triple 8 Holden alongside Lowndes – was an impressive third-fastest, while Nick Percat piloted Garth Tander’s HRT Holden to fourth-fastest on the grid. Paul Dumbrell (Rod Nash Ford) and Rick Kelly (Kelly Racing Holden) rounded out the top-six.

This afternoon will see the two fourteen-lap sprint races offering actions for the fans. Grid positions for tomorrow’s feature will be determined by aggregating the finishing results of both driver and co-driver across the two sprint races. In either one of the sprint races, either the driver or co-driver for each car must serve a compulsory pit stop to add an additional tactical element to the weekend’s activities.
