Whincup secured pole for the opening race at Symmons Plains

V8 Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup has claimed pole position in today’s closely-fought qualifying session for the first of this weekend’s two races at Symmons Plans Raceway.

The Team Vodafone muscled his Holden Commodore around the short, narrow circuit with a rapid 51.3569-second lap-time, knocking Ford Performance Racing challengers Mark Winterbottom and Paul Dumbrell (who broke the unofficial lap record in yesterday’s practice sessions) off the battle for top spot.

Dumbrell will share the third row with Stone Brothers Ford driver Shane van Gisbergen, which could potentially lead to a bit of panel-rubbing in today’s race after Dumbrell fired a few (petty, in the view of many) salvos in the direction of the Kiwi, stemming from a practice incident between the pair at the previous round in Surfers Paradise.

Tony D’Alberto was an impressive fifth-fastest in his Ford, while Whincup’s team-mate and main championship rival, Craig Lowndes, was sixth-fastest. But Lowndes will start from D’Alberto’s grid slot, by dint of a three-place penalty for the Wilson Security driver, who ignored yellow flags during practice.
