Grand Prix Men, by Ted MacAuley
Hardcover, © 1998 Andre Deutsch Limited ISBN 978023399422X

Grand Prix MenGrand Prix Men is a selection of interviews conducted by Formula 1 correspondent Ted MacAuley.  Along with the usual suspect, David Coulthard, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher, MacAuley also takes the time to interview those behind the scenes that help the greatest show on earth get off the ground and stay in touch.

There are a multitude of books out there focusing on the greatness and determination of drivers, however, Grand Prix Men gives us an insight – albeit brief – into what happens behind the scenes of Formula 1 and the people who help to bring those all famous drivers, teams and circuits to their peak.

From Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley and Ron Dennis to Mike Chapman (Benetton Physiotherapist), Murray Walker (Commentator), and Willi Weber (Schumacher’s Manager), Ted takes us through how they came to be involved in Formula 1 to what it takes to keep a driver, team or circuit at their best, safest and in top shape.

The majority of the book is written in the interviewees own words, whether they be glowing endorsements, harsh, critical or slightly arrogant, as in Gary Anderson, Jordan Technical Director but let’s face it his team was pretty much in the toilet when he came on board a second time so you can forgive the narcissism.

Although the book is over 10 years old I found it to be a great insight into the often not seen and heard members of Formula 1 and it was fascinating to see the hopes, dreams and ideas that Ron Dennis, Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone had for the future of Formula 1 and if they actually made those dreams happen.

Using RichardsF1.com’s unique ‘Chequered Flags’ rating system, I award Grand Prix Men

OUT OF A POSSIBLE FIVE.
