Sebastián Saavedra will have his second IndyCar call-up of the 2012 season, with the Andretti Autosport reserve driver landing a one-race entry for the upcoming Grand Prix of Sonoma.
As was the case with the Colombian’s one-off outing at this year’s Indianapolis 500. it will be an effort jointly fielded with AFS Racing, for whom the Colombian races in this year’s Indy Lights championship.
Saavedra competed in last year’s IndyCar Series championship in an entry run by Conquest Racing, but a lack of results and funding stymied his further ambitions to remain on the 2012 grid.
He elected to return to the Indy Lights championship and rebuild his career, while also dovetailing this with a role as Andretti’s test and reserve driver. His one-off outing for the team at Indianapolis yielded a 26th-placed finish after he suffered technical problems during the race.
Senior figureheads from Andretti Autosport and AFS have confirmed that the deal is part of both outfits’ efforts to propel him back into the top flight next year.
“He’s gotten more oval and road course experience, test driven the IndyCars, and run the Indy 500. Now, he’s getting another IndyCar opportunity at Sonoma,” AFS Racing owner Gary Peterson is quoted as saying.
"Everything we’re doing is putting Seb in an excellent position to build upon his future and help set the stage for a great AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport 2013 program. He is a talented driver with a great attitude; he has what it takes to become an IndyCar champion.”
“I’ve been impressed this year with Sebastian,” added Andretti Autosport team principal Michael Andretti.
“Running this season in Firestone Indy Lights provides great testing opportunities and is the best decision for Sebastian as he works to advance in the sport. Having the opportunity to run both the Indy 500 and at Sonoma lets him ease into the new DW12 car and back into the Series.”
