Will Davison has won pole position for the 2012 Bathurst 1000

Will Davison has claimed his first Bathurst 1000 pole position ahead of tomorrow’s 50th anniversary endurance race. The championship contender delivered a perfect flying lap in tricky conditions to secure Saturday’s bragging rights in the V8 Supercars Championship’s most important race.

The Ford Performance Racing driver endured a nervous wait while the final four runners went out to post the single flying lap attempt to snatch pole position.

Championship leader Jamie Whincup came closest, clocking purple sector times in the first two sectors of the 6.2-kilometre lap, before falling just three-hundredths of a second short of Davidson’s effort. Whincup’s lap was all the more impressive given that it came when conditions were at their worst, with spots of rain having started to fall around the circuit.

Shane van Gisbergen and Mark Winterbottom ensured that three Fords would claim the top-four spots, lining up ahead of of the Holdens of Fabian Coulthard and Garth Tander.

Tim Slade and David Reynolds will start from the fourth row of their grid in their Ford Falcons, while Craig Lowndes and Steve Owen both struggled on their hot laps, posting the slowest times in the Top-10 Shootout.
