The Cool 500: The Coolest Cars Ever Made, edited  by Matt Master

Top Gear: The Cool 500Define ‘cool’ and you’ll be halfway towards understanding how that can apply to cars, but you’ll also appreciate that ‘cool’ is relative and entirely subjective.

Creating any kind of countdown-style book is always going to great contention among your readers.

Top Gear’s latest effort, The Cool 500, has played a clever hand with a hefty list of what it argues are 500 of the coolest creations equipped with at least four wheels

That’s guaranteed to satisfy the bulk of motoring fans, who will be thrilled to see many – if not all – of their favourites from eras past and present in a beautifully made up book.

But what’s equally pleasing about The Cool 500 is that its creators have thought outside the box and included some of history’s greatest racing cars in the mix, with the likes of Jaguar, Chevron, Brawn GP, Brabham, Lotus and Tyrrell all getting nods. Interestingly, the dominant F1 machines from McLaren, Williams, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari failed to make the cut – evidently sheer brilliance doesn’t always equate to coolness…

And using the ‘Chequered Flag’ ratings unique to RichardsF1.com, The Cool 500 is awarded:
