Mark Webber was fastest in the final practice session of his Formula 1 career

Mark Webber has finished atop the timesheets in the final practice session he will drive before he leaves Formula 1 altogether.

The Australian finished 0.3 seconds clear of Romain Grosjean in another rain-soaked session at Interlagos, with Grosjean’s teammate Heikki Kovalainen completing the top three.

Quite how much should be gauged from this morning’s practice form is certainly questionable, given the theme of tyre preservation was one adopted right through the field with more rain forecast in qualifying and the race.

A number of front runners – Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and both Ferrari drivers – didn’t bother to set a time in the one-hour session.

Race favourite Sebastian Vettel was also well down the timesheets, completing just four laps of the Interlagos circuit en route to seventeenth on the timesheets.

Contrastingly, Valtteri Bottas hauled his Williams to the giddy heights of fourth on the timing screens, with the Finnish rookie lapping 0.7 seconds off Webber’s pace.

He finished two-tenths of a second faster than Nico Hülkenberg, who managed another top-five practice result in his Sauber.

Jean-Éric Vergne once again made the top-six in practice this weekend, while Esteban Gutiérrez, Pastor Maldonado, Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil rounded out the top ten.
