Scott McLaughlin, Craig Lowndes and Russell Ingall have claimed the top three starting positions for Saturday’s two sprint races at Barbagallo Raceway.

McLaughlin and Lowndes will start from pole position in today’s respective 100-kilometre races, while Ingall impressively took the privateer Lucas Dumbrell Holden to third-fastest in both ten-minute qualifying sessions.

Heading into the final minute of the session, defending champion Jamie Whincup held provisional pole, only to be toppled by Ingall, Lowndes and finally McLaughlin.

Whincup, who has dominated the event in recent years, ultimately tumbled down to eleventh as a number of other drivers improved on their final flying lap.

For McLaughlin, it marked his third pole position in succession after back-to-back P1 efforts last time out in New Zealand.

Behind the top-three came Fabian Coulthard, while Lee Holdsworth and Chaz Mostert ensured four different manufacturers were represented on the first three rows of the grid in their respective Erebus AMG and Ford Falcon runners.

Will Davison and championship leader Mark Winterbottom followed suit in the second Erebus and FPR entries, with David Reynolds and Dale Wood rounding out the top ten.

Local driver Garth Tander qualified twelfth-fastest behind Whincup, while his HRT teammate James Courtney languished in sixteenth in a poor session for the factory-supported Holdens.

Despite pre-event expectations that the Nissan runners would qualify well here, all four Altimas will line up well down the order; Rick Kelly was the fastest of the quartet in seventeenth.

Also struggling was Shane van Gisbergen, who has never showed well over his entire V8 Supercars career. The Kiwi will line up nineteenth.

The qualifying form continued into today’s second ten-minute session, although this time it was Lowndes who got the better of McLaughlin. The former champion managed the effort on his first flying lap and then opted to save his tyres for the remainder of the session, nervously watching on as the remaining 24 drivers proved unable to better his benchmark time.

Lowndes’ teammate Whincup had a better time of it in this session, qualifying his Red Bull Holden fourth-fastest, ahead of championship leader Winterbottom.

The Erebus pairing of Will Davison and Lee Holdsworth continued to defy pre-event predictions that their AMGs might struggle here, backing up their pace in the first session to qualify sixth and ninth respectively. The pair sandwich James Courtney and Chaz Mostert on the grid.

Swedish import Robert Dahlgren drove well in this session, putting his Volvo S60 thirteenth-fastest.
