Current Formula 1 championship leader Lewis Hamilton has returned to the top of the timesheets in Saturday’s final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix.

In a closely-fought session, Hamilton set a fastest time of 1:16.758, just edging out Daniel Ricciardo, who gave Red Bull Racing plenty of encouragement that it could take the fight to Mercedes this weekend.

Following a rain-affected second practice session on Thursday, the field was greeted with beautiful weather in the principality as they set about fine-tuning their set-ups ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s 78-lap race.

The early higher-fuel runs saw Nico Rosberg quicker than Hamilton, although perhaps only by dint of Hamilton never getting a truly clear lap during this phase of the session.

As the field switched to Pirelli’s Super Soft rubber, Hamilton was then able to find some space and move to the top of the timesheets.

Ricciardo delivered a strong showing with the second-fastest time ahead of Rosberg, while the sister Red Bull Racing of Sebastian Vettel was fourth-fastest.

Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen completed the top six for Ferrari. The pair kicked off a Noah’s Ark formation thereon, ahead of the two Force Indias, the Toro Rossos, the McLarens and the Williams’.
