Lewis Hamilton has returned to the top of the timesheets, while his team-mate Nico Rosberg found himself at the other end of the grid.

Making up for an interrupted second practice session yesterday, Hamilton put in the most laps of the field with 23, a whole 20 laps more than Rosberg.

However it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Briton, as he made complaints about the balance of his front brakes. Usually one to favour Brembo brakes, Hamilton is currently using Carbon Industrie for better reliability.

A problem with the gearbox saw Rosberg sit out the majority of the session, hindering his preparations for qualifying. Reliability is becoming a serious issue for the Mercedes outfit.

Alonso

Fernando Alonso remained competitive for Ferrari, setting the second fastest time of the session four-tenths behind Hamilton’s best time. His team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was seventh, a further four-tenths back.

Williams flexed their muscles and returned to the front of the grid with Valtteri Bottas half a second off the pace in third position. His team-mate Felipe Massa was just a fraction slower, setting the faster first sector time on his flying lap.

Red Bull didn’t have the best of sessions, but racked up the mileage ahead of qualifying with a combined lap total of 33. Sebastian Vettel was sixth fastest, three places ahead of Daniel Ricciardo who has improved from the two practice sessions yesterday.

A gearbox failure left Sergio Pérez stranded on track at Curva Grande. Exiting the first corner chicane his Force India jumped into neutral as he upshifted and became stuck. Team-mate Nico Hülkenberg was a second off the leaders pace in 10th.

Daniil Kvyat outpaced his team-mate Jean-Éric Vergne by a full second and ended the session in an impressive eighth position, however an engine change will see him drop 10 places from where he qualifies.
