Jamie Whincup and his Red Bull Racing Australia co-driver Paul Dumbrell have performed a complete whitewash in qualifying for Sunday’s Sandown 500 endurance race.

The pair were quickest in provisional qualifying and went on to win both qualifying heat races that determined the final starting order for Sunday’s 161-lap race. With today’s format split into a 20-minute qualifying session and two points- free 20-lap races (one for the co-drivers, and the other for the regulars), you’d have thought the main race was on today, such was the amount of action and carnage on display.

The first heat race saw Dumbrell launch off the line – some felt a little too well – and into an early lead. With victory assured early on, Red Bull would have typically instructed their driver to ease off, but with the threat of a possible 10-second time penalty in case he did jump the start, Dumbrell pushed hard to the finish and had a winning margin on over six seconds.

Second place went to Jonathon Webb, team owner of TEKNO Autosports and co-driver to Shane van Gisbergen. Webb hadn’t driven a race car in anger all year, but he showed absolutely no rustiness starting from seventh. Starting from seventh place, the Holden driver worked his way ahead of the two scrapping HRT Holdens and Steve Owen’s Ford to slot into second place.

2014 Sandown 500 - Heat Race 2

Whincup had to fend off a hard-charging Shane van Gisbergen in the second heat race.

With Dumbrell ultimately managing to avoid a time penalty (which would only have dropped Whincup to second on the grid anyway), the second heat race saw the return of the regular drivers and was plain sailing for Whincup.

The reigning champion held his position off the line and led from start to finish, but unlike co-driver Dumbrell’s cruisy ride Whincup was made to work thanks to a hard-charging Shane van Gisbergen in the TEKNO Holden.

Van Gisbergen’s efforts were gallant, but ultimately in vain. The pair enjoyed the scrap, even though it was largely just for bragging rights as there were no championship points attached to today’s result.

“It’s actually quite refreshing to have a race without points,” said Whincup after a perfect day for the #1 Holden. “You just go hard and rag it and see what happens. I really enjoyed it.”

Whincup’s main championship rival, Ford driver Mark Winterbottom, finally had something to smile about by finishing third in this heat race, giving him a second-row starting position for tomorrow’s 500-kilometre race. Scott McLaughlin finished fourth in his GRM Volvo, ahead of Garth Tander in the first of the HRT Holdens.

Tomorrow’s 161-lap Feature Race starts at 1:40pm local time (UTC +10).
