Nico Rosberg has finished two-tenths clear ahead of his team-mate and Championship leader Lewis Hamilton in the opening practice session in Brazil.

Drivers were faced with a new track surface which meant grip levels were incredibly low and catching quite a few out, with Daniel Juncadella being the main victim.

Juncadella stood in for Sergio Perez at Force India, although may have done more harm than good. He had a spin at Turn Six then later on in the session lost control of the car and buried it into the barriers at Turn Seven, bringing out the red flag.

Jenson Button’s session lasted all but one lap, after his McLaren stopped at the entry of pit lane whilst he was at the end of his installation lap. An ERS failure was later deemed to be the issue and the team were unable to get the car out for another run.

Max Verstappen had another run in FP1, again in the place of Jean-Eric Vergne. Verstappen’s session was very impressive despite a lock up which saw him take a detour of the old tracks layout at Turn One. He spent majority of the 90 minutes in the top five, only being demoted down to sixth in the last 10 minutes.

His team-mate Daniil Kvyat ended the session in third position, under a second off Rosberg’s benchmark.

Felipe Nasr was another reserve driver getting a run in FP1, taking the place of Valtteri Bottas. He finished down the order in 12th position and seven-tenths behind team-mate Felipe Massa in fifth.

Ferrari had a decent start to the weekend, with Fernando Alonso finishing in fourth position. Kimi Raikkonen was a bit further down in eighth after a spin at Turn Six.

Daniel Ricciardo was the best placed Red Bull driver in 10th position, just under 1.5 seconds off the pace. Sebastian Vettel ended the session in 14th a further six-tenths behind.
