Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne has extended his advantage in the series by leading an ART one-two in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix Feature Race. Team-mate Nobuharu Matsushita was a fraction behind in second, less than a tenth off Vandoorne’s benchmark.

Practice pacesetter Sergey Sirotkin was quickest in the first half of qualifying, with Vandoorne and Raffaele Marciello narrowly falling short of the Rapax driver’s pace. Vandoorne eventually relegated Sirotkin to second position, before the Russian posted a lap time identical to Vandoorne’s.

Alexander Rossi endured a poor qualifying due to brake issues with his car. At a time where he could not afford to let Vandoorne get any extra points or advantage, his Racing Engineering wasn’t up to the challenge today and the American had to settle for twelfth position.

One position ahead of Rossi was Mitch Evans, who was another driver disappointed with his qualifying result. Evans finished the practice session in second position and pole position looked promising for the Russian Time driver, however he was unable to string a fast lap together, mostly due to the high traffic on the track.

The DAMS duo of Pierre Gasly and Alex Lynn were fast throughout the entire session, both holding down third and fourth positions towards the last few minutes of qualifying. Gasly was able to improve his lap time to keep third position, while Lynn dropped back down to tenth as other drivers made late improvements.

Nick Yelloly put in a brilliant first sector which set him up to take fourth place, although late fast laps by Rio Haryanto and Matsushita relegated him down to seventh.

The Feature Race takes place at 15:40 local time (GMT +2).
