Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time on the second day of pre-season testing on Pirelli’s new ultra-soft tyre, seven-tenths of a second ahead of Daniel Ricciardo.

The four-time world champion clocked up a third best total of 126 laps running all tyre compounds except the hards. His lap total was, only beaten by Williams’ Valtteri Bottas (134) and Nico Rosberg (172).

Rosberg bested his teammate’s efforts on day one, beating his lap total by 16 laps and was half a second quicker once the day’s running had concluded.

Sergio Perez, Ricciardo, Marcus Ericsson, Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen were the other drivers to pass the 100 lap mark.

Perez slotted in ahead of Rosberg in third position after posting his best time on the super-soft tyre, which was eight-tenths of a second off Vettel’s pace.

Ericsson improved on his results from yesterday and finished the session in fifth position ahead of Esteban Gutierrez, who enjoyed a respectable 79 laps throughout the day.

Just under three seconds off Vettel’s benchmark was Bottas in seventh position, followed by Pascal Wehrlein 0.3 seconds behind with 71 laps completed.

Alonso found himself towards the back of the order, however the total laps of his first day in the car was more than he was able to notch up in the whole of 2015 pre-season testing.

Jolyon Palmer again found himself struggling with problems throughout the day, where a turbo problem ended his afternoon on 47 laps and in 10th position.

Max Verstappen ended his first day back in the car in last position 3.7 seconds off the pace, and brought out the second red flag of the day when he too stopped out on track after an electrical issue.
