Nico Rosberg has again outpaced his teammate Lewis Hamilton ahead of qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel a fraction behind in third.

While Rosberg set the pace early, demoting Kimi Räikkönen on the mediums off the top spot, Hamilton’s first flying lap put him in second position, although almost half a second off the German’s benchmark.

Ferrari spent the majority of their session running the medium compound tyre which left them a second off Mercedes’ pace. Räikkönen made the switch to softs with ten minutes left to run and slotted his Ferrari third, a full second off Rosberg’s best.

Vettel followed soon after and was narrowly beaten by Hamilton, with just 0.021 seconds separating the two World Champions.

Max Verstappen silenced his critics by placing his Red Bull Racing in fourth position and under one-tenth of a second quicker than teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who ran wide at Turn 9 during his fastest lap.

Valtteri Bottas finished in seventh position behind fellow Finn Räikkönen, and outpaced his Williams teammate Felipe Massa who was over two-tenths of a second behind in twelfth position.

Like yesterday, Force India ran identical programmes with both of their drivers spending the majority of their session on the medium compound tyre. Sergio Perez was eighth ahead of Daniil Kvyat and Fernando Alonso, while his teammate Nico Hülkenberg was one-tenth of a second behind in eleventh.

The Haas pairing of Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez failed to improve on yesterday’s underwhelming performances, with both drivers finishing well off the pace. Grosjean was fourteenth-fastest behind Carlos Sainz, and Gutiérrez was seventeenth, sandwiched between the Renaults of Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer.
