Jason Bright will bring his Racing Entitlements Contract – and a brand new major sponsor – to complete Prodrive Racing’s stable for the 2017 Australian Supercars Championship season, it has finally been confirmed.
Following Bright’s split with Brad Jones Racing after a seven-year stint with the Albury squad, rumours quickly grew that the series veteran would move his REC away from the team and make a return to Prodrive.
The 43-year-old drove for the outfit under its factory Ford Performance Racing guise in 2005-6 (pictured right).
The rumours became a near-certain confirmation with news that Bright’s teammate, Tim Blanchard – who raced under Bright’s REC this year – had purchased the Super Black Racing REC to keep his seat at Brad Jones Racing.
Super Black Racing had been the fourth car operated out of the Prodrive stable, and the vacancy looked set to be claimed by Bright.
The switch-up was officially confirmed today, with Prodrive Racing confirming that Bright will join its stable of drivers who include Mark Winterbottom, Cameron Waters and Chaz Mostert.
Bright will drive a #56 entry with backing from petrol supply company MEGA Limited, which will make its debut appearance as a major sponsor in the Supercars Championship.
“It is great to have Jason back at the team and we are all looking forward to having him back racing our cars and continuing the success we shared all those years ago,” said Prodrive Racing team boss Tim Edwards.
“There is actually a lot of staff that he worked with in ’05/06 that are still part of the team so there is a degree of familiarity which will help too, plus he will bring a lot of knowledge and be a great sounding board for Chaz and Cam, which will be a big benefit.”
“I am really excited about the opportunity for 2017,” Bright added. “I feel like we can be competitive.
“PRA have been very successful in the last few years with plenty of race wins, two Bathurst titles and a championship, so I am looking forward to stepping back into one of their cars and seeing how we go.
“It is also great to see a new sponsor in MEGA Limited entering the series and I am going to enjoy representing them.”
