Charles Leclerc continued his dominance over qualifying in 2017 with another pole position at the Spa-Francorchamps, this time however he did it in wet conditions in a session interrupted by red flags.
The session started in very poor conditions but with the rain slowing down there was hope for times to improve as Nyck de Vries, Luca Ghiotto and Antonio Fuoco all topping the time sheets for some time before Leclerc put his PREMA at the top at the halfway mark of the session with a succession of two laps that were good enough for the top spot, the best being a 2:20.842 which is about 22 seconds slower than the pace set by Leclerc in morning’s practice.
With the track continuing to improve, drivers improved their laptimes more and Leclerc’s top spot was threatened by Artem Markelov setting the fastest time in sector 1. This all came to a stop, however, when Sergio Sette Camara’s spin brought the session to a stop under red flags.
The session restarted with just under 4 minutes on the clock but with rain intensifying and track conditions getting worse, Leclerc’s pole was not under any threat and he took his sixth pole from seven events in 2017, 0.668s ahead of Nicholas Latifi in 2nd and Oliver Rowland in 3rd, the DAMS duo being the only drivers within a second of Leclerc’s pole.
Gustav Malja will start 4th ahead of Antonio Fuoco and Nyck de Vries who qualified a decent 6th on his Racing Engineering debut.
Luca Ghiotto starts 7th ahead of series returnee Roberto Merhi who qualified 8th while Artem Markelov and Alexander Albon round up the top ten in 9th and 10th respectively.
Saturday’s Feature Race, to be staged over 25 laps, will start at 16:00 local time (GMT +2).
