Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo from Australia emerged as the fastest driver on the final official day of testing for Formula 1 teams in 2009. The British F3 champion completed his fastest lap at Jerez in 1:17.418 and was over a second quicker than everyone else. Paul di Resta took the runner’s-up position behind the wheel of the Force India car, followed by Oliver Turvey in the McLaren.
The first test session ever scheduled only for drivers with little to no experience in Formula 1 was punctuated by several red flags. Di Resta himself caused two of these by spinning the Force India VJM02.
Ricciardo also caused a red flag when his car came to a stop with an engine problem towards the end of the day’s running.
Mike Conway continued testing his Brawn GP (the team’s last ever outing in its current guise before morphing into Mercedes-Benz GP next year) and ended in fourth place. He was followed by Williams’ 2009 driver Nico Hulkenberg.
The final testing times were:
|1.||Daniel Ricciardo||Red Bull Renault||1:17.418||(77 laps)|
|2.||Paul di Resta||Force India Mercedes||1:18.736||(53)|
|3.||Gary Paffet||McLaren Mercedes||1:18.746||(59)|
|4.||Mike Conway||Brawn GP Mercedes||1:19.096||(77)|
|5.||Nico Hulkenberg||Williams Cosworth||1:19.226||(106)|
|6.||Bertrand Baguette||BMW Sauber||1:19.356||(70)|
|7.||Oliver Turvey||McLaren Mercedes||1:19.358||(32)|
|8.||Marcus Ericsson||Brawn GP Mercedes||1:19.382||(49)|
|9.||Lucas di Grassi||Renault||1:19.602||(123)|
|10.||J.R. Hildebrand||Force India Mercedes||1:19.873||(41)|
|14.||Brendon Hartley||Toro Rosso Ferrari||1:22.493||(50)|
|15.||Mirko Bortolotti||Toro Rosso Ferrari||1:23.271||(34)|
With the third and final day of testing of the year the action in F1 has come to an end and the teams will be back in action in the first week of February at Valencia for a three-day test.
