At least that’s the hope of Sébastien Buemi, who will be making his competitive debut at the circuit after being present in 2008 as Red Bull’s reserve driver.
“I remember they had problems with the asphalt breaking up and I understand that much of it has now been resurfaced,” he recalled.
Past editions of the Canadian Grand Prix – particularly the previous rounds in 2007 and 2008 – suffered as the track crumbled during the F1 practice sessions, which led to a single usable line in many sections of the track and seriously limited overtaking on a track usually suited to passing.
In the absence of the event last year, race promoters carried out major resurfacing work – on top of repairs to the plumbing under the circuit – in conjunction with Shell Bitumen, whose products have also been used at several Hermann Tilke designed circuits such as Sakhir, Sepang, Singapore and the two German circuits of Hockenheim and the Nurburgring.
Montreal’s harsh winter and heavy snowfalls are believed to be the contributing factor to the past track surface problems, but with the race held in the Canadian spring the drivers obviously won’t be experiencing any such issues.
However, weather forecasters are predicting a high chance of precipitation during qualifying, with a lesser chance on race day.
That should spice things up somewhat…!
