In Australian motorsport history, few can boast a record that would compete with Mark Skaife.
In 218 Australian Touring Car / V8 Supercars Championship events, he finished on the podium 172 times and took 89 race wins – a record that stands to this day. Added to this, there are six Bathurst 1000 wins and five Drivers’ Championship crowns.
Simply put, he is one of the best racing drivers Australia has ever seen.
And Skaifey: The Mark Skaife Story is a look back at this man’s career that has spanned the last four decades.
With his father being a tin-top peddler, it was no surprise that the young Skaife would follow in his footsteps, and his talent was evident for all to see early on.
With an enormous archive of footage spanning his career, the DVD interweaves this with a series of interviews with Skaife’s closest colleagues, managers and rivals. The likes of motorsport boss Fred Gibson and team-mates such as Jim Richards, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly, Garth Tander – and some outstanding insights from driver/commentator Neil Crompton – complement the entire package extremely well.
Fans of Skaife will be thrilled to see this as part of their collection, while those perhaps less familiar with his exploits will find this fascinating and enjoyable.
Skaife’s career is interwoven in the history of the Nissan GTR’s forays in the Australian touring car scene, and he is also a key figure in the fabric of the mighty Holden Racing Team. The highs and lows of his career are all neatly captured in this biopic, which should be part of any touring car fan’s collection.
