The first DVD release of the episodes from the Top Gear Australia franchise has hit the shelves, and fans of the series can now relive the episodes from the latest series in this double-disc production.
Over four hours of footage cover four episodes from the show’s third series – its first since moving to Channel 9 – and its third combination of hosts, with Ewan Page and Shane Jacobson joining the franchise.
In an acknowledgement of its roots, the opening episode of the season was the show’s ‘Ashes Special’, where the hosts travelled to the UK and were pitted against the mothership – the UK show’s hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May – in a series of great Australia vs. UK challenges.
While the show has taken a while to find its feet, it’s steadily branched away from its parent show and forged its own identity, as is evidenced with the remaining episodes shot back on home soil.
True to form, there are plenty of great challenges, road tests and celebrity guests out to compete in the show’s Star in a Bog-Standard Car segment.
Despite being a new host combination, the new arrivals of Page and Jacobson have breathed new life into the show, and Jacobson has eased into the role of being the ‘lead’ host with great aplomb.
Disappointingly, the discs contain no special features, and it could have done with this to enhance the ‘get to know the hosts’ factor for audience members new to the Australian franchise.
