Bruno Spengler has taken back-to-back pole positions in 2011, finishing fastest overall in qualifying for tomorrow’s DTM race at Zandvoort.Bruno Spengler clinched back-to-back pole positions by going quickest at Zandvoort

Despite not being fastest in any of the three preceding knockout qualifying sessions, the HWA Mercedes driver was quickest when it counted in the final single-lap shoot-out by producing a lap time that could not be beaten by any of his main rivals. The championship leader will start from P1 with team-mate Jamie Green sharing the front row.

Green was the only driver to complete his flying lap when Spengler posted his pole-clinching time, and the Briton – who had finished in the top-two at the end of each of the previous phases of qualifying – was fractionally slower than Spengler on his hot-lap.

The top-four on the grid features a balanced split between Mercedes-Benz and Audi, with the second row of the grid occupied by Mike Rockenfeller and Martin Tomczyk, who drove outstandingly in the older-spec A4 to go fourth-quickest.

The even split continued, with the third row comprised of Gary Paffett (Mercedes) and Timo Scheider (Audi), the latter of whom had been particularly quick in the earlier practice sessions.

DTM rookie Edoardo Mortata starts an excellent seventh-fastest, ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Miguel Molina and Filipe Albuquerque, who rounds out the top-ten on the Coulthard was pleased to qualify as high as 14th after an off in practice grid.

David Coulthard will start 14th after an accident in free practice, while Mattias Ekström endured a horror qualifying session and will start from 16th place after failing to make it beyond the first phase of qualifying. The result is the Swede’s worst qualifying result in the championship in nine years.
