Craig Lowndes took his maiden Winton pole position today

Craig Lowndes has taken his first ever pole position at Winton Raceway ahead of today’s first race in this weekend’s Winton 300 V8 Supercars championship round.

The Team Vodafone driver produced a fastest lap of 1:22.0979 in a busy twenty-minute qualifying session, and will share the front row with the ever-improving Steven Johnson, whose Jim Beam Racing Ford was just edged off pole by five-hundredths of a second.

It was a good session for Team Vodafone, with Lowndes’ team-mate – and the current championship leader – Jamie Whincup qualifying third-fastest, ahead of Lee Holdsworth, Paul Dumbrell and David Reynolds, who achieved his best-ever qualifying result with the sixth-fastest time.

The top-ten is completed by Fabian Coulthard, Mark Winterbottom, Will Davison and Michael Caruso.

Defending series champion – an double-race-winner here last year – James Courtney had a poor qualifying session and will start from a lowly 19th.

The first race – which is 40 laps in length – starts later this afternoon.
