Senna Fights Back – The Official Review of the 1993 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Season
VHS, © 1993 DUKE, 90 minutes
While the title would lead you to think that this season review video will be as one-eyed in its focus of Ayrton Senna as the 1992 video review was of Nigel Mansell, thankfully this is not the case, and The Official Review of the 1993 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Season delivers in abundance for the viewer.
The 1993 season saw Alain Prost skip to a fourth World Championship crown in the all-conquering Williams Renault FW15C, but he was given a stern test in the early stages by Ayrton Senna, who found himself performing miracles in the Ford-powered McLaren. The Senna-Prost battle is one of the highlights of the review, and the steady defrosting of tensions between the two is apparent in this review.
And while there’s plenty of action up at the front, the video review also gives plenty of air time to many of the other battles up and down the field.
There’s plenty of pre-race build-up and post-race analysis in comparison to some video reviews of the past, although it does miss out with a lack of interview footage that could have been easily included.
Narrator Jonathan Ross is an engaging and entertaining front-man for the video, although his inability to say the letter ‘R’ could be amusing or irritating, depending on your position – any lines about ‘Jean Awesi dwiving in the Fewwawi’ certainly created some mirth for this reviewer!
HITS: Despite its title, a well-balanced portrayal of all of the major protagonists in the 1993 Formula 1 season.
MISSES: Very difficult to fault this title, it’s a shame that it simply wasn’t longer. At times, the 90-minute timeframe seems a little breathless, and some extra interview footage would have helped.
BEST BITS: The season was famous for some quite spectacular accidents, and this review video certainly covers the best of the bunch, such as Gerhard Berger’s pit exit crash at Portugal, the two Minardis’ last-lap collision at Italy and the first-corner smash between Berger and Andretti at Brazil.
