Hollywood A-list actor Tom Cruise was given a special treat by Red Bull Racing on the team’s recent promotional visit to the United States, getting to sample F1 power with a secret test at California’s Willow Springs circuit.
The actor took a break from post-production duties for his latest Mission: Impossible film to spend a day with the team and its ambassador, 13-time Grand Prix winner and BBC F1 commentator David Coulthard, who spent the day showing him the ropes of Red Bull’s F1 show car.
He kicked off his day lapping the circuit and learning the racing lines in a passenger car with Coulthard before setting out on a few exploratory runs in the single-seater.
With Coulthard having posted a benchmark lap-time, the Days of Thunder actor racked up a total of 24 laps of the 2.5-mile circuit, improving his lap time by a total of eleven seconds over the course of the day. His quickest and final lap was just 4mph slower than DC’s best, with the actor hitting top speeds of close to 300km/h.
“I was surprised that he picked it up so quickly and is such an accomplished driver,” Coulthard said after the seven-hour event.
“His recall was incredible considering how complicated driving an F1 car is. He’s a guy who really pushes the envelope in real life. This day was not green-screened. And he thoroughly impressed me.”
That is assessment is perhaps of little surprise when you recall that Cruise temporarily held the track record on Top Gear’s ‘Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car’ segment.
