Volvo’s Polestar Racing squad has announced that Robert Dahlgren will partner Tommy Rustad in the outfit for the final two races of the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship season, which will be held at Knutstorp and Mantorp.
Dahlgren, the defending STCC title holder, made his full-time World Touring Car Championship switch with Polestar Racing as part of the squad’s evaluation season with a one-car operation. The Swede has performed impressively despite the outfit’s low expectations, and currently lies in the top-ten of the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Dahlgren’s involvement in the final two rounds is purely to support the championship aspirations of Rustad; the Norwegian currently lies third in the title race behind Frederik Ekblom (VW) and Rickard Rydell (Chevrolet), the latter of whom will be partnered by SEAT WTCC driver Michel Nykjær for the same purpose.
“Our position is strong and my task is crystal clear where I am going to help Tommy for the drivers title and to bring the teams’ title to Volvo Polestar Racing,” Dahlgren is quoted as saying.
“We have decided to bring in Dahlgren, who has got a vast experience of the Swedish tracks, as our current WTCC programme does not clash with the two final STCC races,” added Polestar Racing’s MD, Christian Dahl.
Dahl also confirmed that the outfit was in negotiations to sign former WTCC champion Gabriele Tarquini to its line-up for 2012, after the Italian’s two appearances for the squad in the STCC earlier this year.
“We have had two rewarding races with Gabriele and we are continuing the negotiations ahead of 2012,” he added.
