Audi driver Miguel Molina has claimed pole position at the DTM’s final round of the 2011 championship calendar, edging out Mercedes’ Jamie Green with a sensational flying lap in the final one-lap ‘shootout’ phase of qualifying at Hockenheim.
As the fastest driver in the third phase of today’s qualifying session, Molina was the fourth and final driver to attempt to post his flying lap attempt, clocking a 1:32.717 to taker top honours. It is the Spaniard’s second pole position of the season, after his maiden DTM pole two rounds ago at Oschersleben.
The second row of the grid is occupied by newly-crowned DTM champion Martin Tomczyk, who starts alongside fellow Audi runner Mike Rockenfeller.
Having just missed out on a berth in the top-four group, Timo Scheider made it four Audis in the top-five, and he will start alongside Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler (pole-sitter when the season was opened at Hockenheim) on the third row.
With the Canadian out to claim runner-up honours in the championship, his only rival, Audi driver Mattias Ekström, could only qualify tenth-fastest. The Swede was denied the opportunity to improve his Q2 time when fellow Audi driver Edoardo Mortara slid into the tyre barriers towards the end of the session, bringing out the red flags.
