While the rest of us are recovering from overindulging in too much Christmas ham and turkey, the party is still continuing near Milton Keynes, with Red Bull Racing design guru Adrian Newey celebrating his 53rd birthday today!
Born in Stratford-upon-Avon he was a classmate of Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson at Repton Public School before he went to university, graduating with first-class honours in aeronautics and astronautics from Southampton University.
He moved straight into Formula 1, working under Harvey Postlethwaite at the little Fittipaldi team in 1980. The next year, he moved to the March team and also had a stint in Formula 2 before he tried his hand at designing racing cars, a career for which he is now world-famous.
In 1983, he switched to IndyCars with March and began working on their 1984 challenger, which claimed seven wins, including the Indianapolis 500. In 1985, Al Unser won the series title in Newey’s March 85C, and Bobby Rahal repeated the feat a year later.
He moved back to Formula 1 circles and rejoined March’s F1 project, and under Newey’s leadership, the team steadily began to improve in competitiveness.
By 1990. he’d been hired by the Williams F1 team, and alongside Technical Director Patrick Head, the two were a dominant force for nearly the next decade.
He joined McLaren in 1997, and his 1998 challenger was immediately a championship winner. Another title followed in 1999, and the team narrowly missed out on a hat-trick in 2000.
He moved to the Red Bull Racing team in 2005, where he has remained to this day. His last design, the 2011 RB7 runner, proved to be one of the most dominant cars in the sport’s history.
