The Official Review of the 2011 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Season DVDHe’s Done It Again! – The Official Review of the 2011 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Season
DVD/BluRay, © 2012, 337 minutes

The 2011 Formula One World Championship Review is the first officially-licensed Formula 1 season review package to be made available in high-definition, and after much wrangling with the Australian Office of Film & Literature Classification, a local distributor has finally been secured to release the two-disc DVD to Australian F1 fans.

And we have a special readership competition on offer, with five DVDs to give away to lucky readers!

But first, let’s get on with our review…

Spanning two discs and over five-and-a-half hours of viewing pleasure, it has plenty to pack in to include all nineteen championship rounds and plenty of back stories to go along with it.

Pre-season testing footage makes a welcome introduction – including an all-too-brief shot of Robert Kubica behind the wheel of the Renault R31 he never actually got to race on account of his horrific rally smash – but rather strangely, there’s almost nothing in the way of a pre-season rundown to cover driver moves and the new technical regulations.

The major component are the individual race reviews and highlights packages, which are up to the usually great standards of Formula One Management’s production team. Ben Edwards once again provides the race highlights commentary, while Will Buxton chimes in with the in-between features.

On the plus side, there’s a smorgasbord of great footage – including plenty of never-before-broadcast onboard and radio snippets – as well as a great selection of behind-the-scenes pieces and spot interviews.

But the review perhaps doesn’t give sufficient attention to some of the action further down the field, and at times there seems to be very little context or background information given – the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix is totally omitted.

There’s also plenty of extra features and some more great onboard highlights on each disc – we understand that the BluRay version contains a further hour of bonus footage, although there’s no confirmation that it will be released over here yet.

Using our unique ‘Chequered Flags’ rating system, we award the 2010 Formula One World Championship Review

OUT OF A POSSIBLE FIVE.
