Nico Rosberg was the fastest driver in final practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg has staked his claim for back-to-back pole positions by posting the fastest time in the final practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The German just edged out his compatriot Sebastian Vettel for top spot, while Mark Webber cemented Red Bull Racing’s improved competitiveness by taking third spot.

As was the case with yesterday’s practice sessions, today’s ran almost incident-free and in front of scarcely any fans. A few drivers took to the circuit’s enormous run-off areas as they continued to try and extract more grip from their Pirelli tyres.

There was a bit of frantic activity on Vettel’s side of the garage as his mechanics tended to an overheating issue at the rear of his RB8 in the closing minutes of play, but he was back out for one final run to post his fastest time of the session and put himself in contention for a good result.

Behind the top-three Lewis Hamilton finished fourth-fastest, with team-mate Jenson Button sixth; the pair sandwiching Michael Schumacher in the second Mercedes. Having gone quickest in the opening practice session yesterday, Hamilton’s lap-times have actually been slower with each passing session – a most unusual phenomenon…
