Garth Tander has won his third pole position of the 2012 V8 Supercars season, claiming top honours in an exciting rain-hit qualifying session ahead of the first of three races at Barbagallo Raceway, home of the Trading Post Perth Challenge.
With the twenty-minute session starting out on a damp track that slowly and steadily dried, Tander timed his run on slick tyres to perfection, posting a session-topping 1:02.1974 lap time on his final tour.
Tander shares the front row with last year’s Perth race-winner Jason Bright, who qualified his Team BOC Holden an impressive second-quickest. Bright has had a wretched season to-date, and the result will be a great confidence boost for the Brad Jones Racing team.
The second row of the grid is shared by defending champion Jamie Whincup, while Jonathon Webb will start from the outside position, having headed the timesheets early on in qualifying.
The third row of the grid is an all-Ford affair, with Ford Performance Racing stablemates Mark Winterbottom and David Reynolds starting fifth and sixth respectively.
The top-ten is completed by Fabian Coulthard, James Courtney, points’ leader Will Davison and Lee Holdsworth.
Aside from Bright’s shock result, the timesheets revealed few drivers who had qualified substantially out of position.
The only exception to this was Craig Lowndes, who will line up a lowly sixteenth in his TeamVodafone Commodore.
Today’s 50-lap race started at 2:05pm local time and more wet weather is expected.
