Australia’s ABC television network will re-air its feature special on three-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham on Monday night on its weekly Australian Story magazine show.
It’s over fifty years since ‘Black Jack’ became the first Australian to win a Formula One World Championship.
Not only did he drive cars, he built them as well. He’s still the only driver to win a world title in a car of his own construction when he claimed the 1966 crown, this third and final title.
Now in his mid-eighties, Sir Jack remains a modest hero who is finally starting to receive proper recognition in his own country, and earlier this year he was bestowed a ‘National Living Treasure’ award from the National Trust.
The motor racing gene is alive and well in the Brabham family. His three sons, Gary, Geoff and David, all pursued motorsport careers of their own, with Gary and David both making it into Formula 1, although sadly neither was enjoy anywhere near the level of success he did.
And now his grandson Matthew (David’s son) is also pursuing his own motorsport career, achieving great success in the junior categories and he plots his own rise through the ranks.
Having seen the original awhile back when it was first aired, this is excellent viewing for anyone in Australia, and the ABC has indicated that it has produced an updated version for its encore screening, which will go to air at 8:00PM AEST on Monday night. Check your local guides for your listing times.
We had the great pleasure of being able to interview Sir Jack this weekend during one of his rare visits to Sydney, and we’ll be publishing this interview soon!
