Top Gear’s latest DVD release advertises itself as “Great Adventures” and it certainly lives up to its title, taking us on a thrilling ride through many-faceted India and picturesque Italy.
That’s not to say the boys aren’t up to their usual antics, however, with scenes of breathtaking Indian alps or charming Italian cityscapes interspersed with good-old British tomfoolery.
The “purpose” of the Indian trip is to foster trade relations between India and Britain to stimulate the struggling British economy. Clarkson and co, pre-warned not to go to India by UK Prime Minister Cameron himself, quickly confirm the PM’s reservations by making fools of themselves and their nation at every turn. From destroying local workers’ delivered lunches to hosting a terrible diplomatic relations’ garden party, the boys leave a trail of mess through India.
The ‘Supercars Across Italy’ special sees the boys travelling through Italy in an attempt to decide which of the Noble M600, Lamborghini Aventador or McLaren MP4-12C is second best after the Ferrari 458. Focussing more on the cars and less on the pranks than the India special, this episode showcases the very best (and in the case of the Noble, the worst) of some of the most desirable vehicles of the modern era.
Being a keen Top Gear fan, this two-disc set doesn’t disappoint, keeping me thoroughly entertained from start to finish. The original episodes themselves would have been more than enough, but entertaining extras such as The Stig’s practice laps or outtakes from the camping in the Indian highlands (featuring Jeremy at his moaning best) is the icing on the cake.
If I had to be picky I’d say that the Indian Special did border on a little too politically incorrect at times, and could rub off the wrong way at times to certain viewers, but most fans would be used to their comedic style and this shouldn’t really be a problem.
