V8 Supercars Championship points’ leader has claimed pole position for today’s opening race of the SkyCity Triple Crown at Darwin, posting a stunning lap-time in today’s Top-10 Qualifying Shootout at Hidden Valley Raceway.
Having been second-quickest in the day’s earlier ‘open’ qualifying session, Davison shot to top spot on his single-lap effort, beating Ford Performance Racing stablemate David Reynolds to provisional pole by a comfortable 0.4 seconds.
Davison’s team-mate Mark Winterbottom – a specialist at Hidden Valley, and quickest in the first qualifying session – was unable to claim a fifth pole position at the circuit and had to settle for the fourth-fastest time when he ran wide at Turn 1.
Defending V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup is the fastest Holden driver in the field, with the TeamVodafone driver claiming third spot on the grid for today’s race.
Not surprisingly, it was a closely-fought opening qualifying session that saw much of the field covered by less than one second.
Finding a clear piece of track on which to complete a decent timed lap would prove crucial and – with the soft Dunlop tyre proving only good enough for one flier in the baking conditions – this saw several drivers come up short.
By far the biggest victim in the session was Whincup’s team-mate Craig Lowndes, who lines up a lowly 20th-fastest after being unable to improve on his fastest lap-time of the session in the closing minutes of play.
Jason Bright was another who failed to improve on his best set of tyres, although the damage to his grid position was comparatively light, leaving him twelfth on the grid for this afternoon’s 120-kilometre race.
