Will the reintroduction of 'push to pass' technology improve the show in the IndyCar Series?

Perhaps inspired by the success that KERS and DRS are having in Formula 1 this season, IndyCar Series officials have announced that its ‘push to pass’ technology will be reintroduced for the five remaining road and street course races on this year’s calendar.

The announcement is something of a surprise given that this year’s season has featured plenty of overtaking on road and street courses. Much of the credit should be given to the series’ chassis builder, Dallara, which has designed its DW12 car to offer less downforce and mechanical grip than its predecessor.

The system will be similar to the technology when it was last used in 2009, according to the championship’s technical boss, Will Phillips.

“It will be similar to what it was in the past because we know that model worked,” he is quoted as saying.

The device’s design allows drivers to increase the turbocharger boost and RPM for a predetermined amount of time, simply by depressing a button on their steering wheel. The IndyCar Series will determine the total amount of time available, recharge time and any delay in the system prior to each activation, and will adjust this according to the characteristics of each of the circuits it visits.

The system will engage only when a certain throttle position has been reached, and will deactivate if the driver lifts off the throttle or presses the button again.

The new technology means that the base turbocharger boost level in the engines supplied by Chevrolet, Honda and Lotus will now be reduced to 150kPa, and increase to 160kPa when the device is engaged.

Teams and drivers will be given the opportunity to test the technology during next weekend’s race on the streets of Toronto.
