Charles Pic will race for the Caterham F1 team next season, with the Leafield-based team announcing that the Frenchman has signed a multi-year contract to race for the squad.
The Frenchman made his Grand Prix debut for the Marussia team as Timo Glock’s team-mate, immediately mpressing with his regular ability to outperform the far more established driver.
“I am very proud to confirm that I am joining Caterham F1 Team next year and I’m looking forward to many seasons of successful racing,” the 22-year-old said in a team media announcement released just before Friday practice got underway at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
“It is clear that the team has great ambitions for the future: the investments made and the decisions taken in the last few months show how committed the shareholders are to succeed and demonstrates their willingness to keep going forward. I am very excited about starting my second year in F1 with a team that has so much potential.”
Pic’s move – a not completely unexpected announcement – effectively paves the way for Marussia’s well-funded reserve driver Max Chilton to be promoted to its race line-up for the 2013 season. having shown racewinning form in Marussia GP2 Series feeder team this year.
Caterham is yet to reveal the identity of Pic’s 2013 team-mate. The announcement effectively leaves either – or both – of the team’s incumbent drivers, Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov, out on their ear, with the latest paddock speculation suggesting that Caterham reserve driver Giedo van der Garde will get the nod for the second seat.
