The FIA has apparently declared the exhaust designs of the Williams FW35 and Caterham CT03 illegal.
Both outfits have designed particularly extreme exhaust layouts to take full advantage of the Coandă effect, but have now apparently been told to modify their designs ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
The controversy was sparked after the launch of each team’s respective cars. While it is common practice for the teams’ exhaust designs to optimise the direction of exhaust gas airflow, Caterham and Williams have adopted more extreme approaches (pictured above).
On the Caterham, a turning vane has been placed inside the exhaust channel to control the exhaust gases in a deliberate manner.
The Williams features a similar treatment, but its design has a small slot in the middle, which the team could use as a loophole in arguing the design’s legality, as it is effectively a two-piece design.
“The team are now seeking further clarification on this and a decision as to whether this design will be carried forward will be made before the first race,” a Williams spokesperson told the BBC, who first broke the story.
“We are continuing to evaluate a range of options at the pre-season tests as per our normal program,” a Caterham spokesperson added.
