Jamie Whincup will start from pole position for the first of today’s two 100-kilometre races at the ITM400 Auckland at Pukekohe Raceway.
The Red Bull Australia clocked the fastest time in the morning’s Top-10 pole Shootout, which occurred shortly after the qualifying session for today’s second race, in which local driver Fabian Coulthard was quickest.
As the fastest driver in the first part of qualifying, Whincup was the final driver out in the one-lap shootout for pole, and managed to ruin Coulthard’s hopes of a perfect qualifying sweep with a rapid 1:02.7600 lap-time.
That consigned Coulthard to the outside front-row start, while Brad Jones Racing teammate Jason Bright was fourth-fastest, with the pair sandwiching the Ford of Mark Winterbottom.
Garry Rogers Motorsport rookie Scott McLaughlin delighted his New Zealand fans by qualifying a sensational fifth, two spots ahead of teammate Alexandre Premat.
Shane van Gisbergen ensured three Kiwis would start inside the top-ten with the sixth-fastest time, while Garth Tander, David Reynolds and Craig Lowndes rounded out the final positions in the shootout.
