Jamie Whincup has survived a red-flag interrupted qualifying session to claim pole position for today’s 60/60 Supersprint race at Barbagallo Raceway.
The Red Bull Racing Australia driver’s final flying lap – posted in the dying seconds of the twenty-minute session – proved good enough for top spot, edging former Barbagallo racewinner Jason Bright into second place on the starting grid.
It’s another Brad Jones Racing / Triple 8 affair on the second row, with Fabian Coulthard third-quickest ahead of Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes.
Ironically, it was the third BRJ entry of David Wall which triggered all of the qualifying chaos. Wall slid into the Turn 7 gravel with just two-and-a-half minutes on the clock, triggering the red flags and a mad scramble for a final flying lap when the session resumed.
Alex Davison had taken his Jeld-wen FPR entry into provisional pole position before the stoppage, only to ultimately be beaten by the four Holdens – despite the disappointment of losing pole, it was the V8 returnee’s best qualifying performance to-date in 2013. He lines up ahead of Alexandre Prémat, Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom, who completed the top-eight.
Undoubtedly the two surprise performers of qualifying were Maro Engel and V8 debutante Chaz Mostert, who both claimed sensational top-ten qualifying results.
The first leg of the 60/60 Supersprint race gets underway at 13:45 local time.
