Swedish racing ace Robert Dahlgren has been announced as Scott McLaughlin’s teammate at the new Volvo Polestar Racing team in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship, joining the team previously known as Garry Rogers Motorsport.
Volvo will become the fifth different car brand in this year’s championship, making a return to the Australian touring car landscape after a near twenty-year absence with a pair of Volvo S60 racers purposebuilt to the current ‘Car of the Future’ regulations.
Thirty-four-year-old Dahlgren has been a longstanding Volvo driver in the Swedish, Scandinavian and World Touring Car Championships, finishing runner-up in his home touring car championship on three separate occasions.
The widely expected news was confirmed at a media event in Melbourne this morning.
“I am really happy to be joining Volvo Polestar Racing in V8 Supercars, it is a dream come true for me,” Dahlgren said.
His appointment was, not surprisingly, met with high praise by Volvo Car Australia managing director Matt Braid and Volvo Polestar Racing team owner Garry Rogers.
“The Volvo S60 is a car Robert knows inside out, so we’re delighted he’s joining our racing program,” Braid said of Dahlgren.
“Robert’s experience and ability to develop a race car will be critical in our debut racing season, so we’re all looking forward to seeing what he – and Scott – can do with the Volvo S60 out on the track.”
“With Robert Dahlgren joining Scott McLaughlin in the team I see this as a great opportunity to continue with our recent solid performances,” Rogers added.
“Robert’s history shows he has proven to be a successful Volvo Polestar Racing driver.”
