Qualifying Session 1: Reigning champ secures first pole position of 2014

Friday’s first of two fifteen-minute qualifying sessions saw Jamie Whincup set his title defence up in the perfect fashion with pole position for the first of tomorrow’s two races.

He Red Bull Racing driver just edged out teammate Craig Lowndes, with Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney completing the second row of the grid.

Scott McLaughlin took his new Volvo S60 to an impressive fifth-fastest time, with the young Kiwi backing up his early practice pace in which he emerged on top of the timesheets in one of the day’s free sessions.

The youngster lines up alongside defending Clipsal 500 winner Shane van Gisbergen, while Todd Kelly was seventh quickest in the updated Nissan ahead of local drivers Scott Pye and Tim Slade.

Qualifying Session 2: Lowndes returns serve

With the field having to quickly reset for a second dash against the stopwatch, it was Lowndes who came out on top in the dying seconds of play to ensure the Red Bull runners a qualifying sweep.

McLaughlin came within a whisker of a shock pole position for the new VolvoThe series veteran starts alongside McLaughlin, who came within a whisker of giving Volvo a shock pole position on its first outing.

The Kiwi held provisional pole position after the first sequence of timed laps, and while he managed to improve his effort on his second run, it wasn’t enough to deny the quicker Lowndes.

Whincup recovered from a poor opening run after he clipped the Turn 1 tyre bundle to secure third on the grid. He starts alongside Jason Bright.

Mark Winterbottom was fifth-quickest, with Lee Holdsworth claiming a solid sixth for Erebus Motorsport, while Michael Caruso ensured all five manufacturers qualified inside the top-ten with the seventh-fastest time.
