Nissan’s Michael Caruso scored his maiden pole position not just for himself, but for Nissan Motorsport in today’s qualifying session for the V8 Supercars’ support races at Albert Park. Caruso, who showed strong pace in the practice sessions leading up to qualifying, finished 0.2 seconds ahead of Shane Van Gisbergen in the VIP Petfoods Holden.

“This is my very first pole position and everyone is pretty happy and very proud,” Caruso said. “It’s something we need to enjoy for the moment and then concentrate on the racing which starts tomorrow.

“It’s a credit to everyone on the engineering group and we work hard together as a four-car team. It is also nice to have your boss (Todd Kelly), who I also race against, be the first person to come over and congratulate you,” he continued.

The Fords were off the pace in qualifying.

The Fords were off the pace in qualifying.

Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin continued his good performance from Adelaide and qualified in third position, although given the pace of the S60 he probably felt like pole was there for the taking.

Things weren’t so pretty when it came to Ford however, with the best placed Falcon of Chaz Mostert finishing 12th, six positions ahead of teammate and next best Ford Mark Winterbottom.

Having a good two practice sessions, Winterbottom admitted to poor setup choices as the reason for the poor qualifying performance. Also finding himself out of position was HRT’s James Courtney, who was 11 places behind teammate Garth Tander who qualified in tenth position.

Race one will get underway Friday at 11am while race two is at 2.25pm.
