Lewis Hamilton has assumed control at the top of the timesheets as Friday practice for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix came to a close.

The Englishman took his Mercedes around the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve layout with a session-topping time of 1:16.188, edging out teammate Nico Rosberg by just under two-tenths of a second. Sebastian Vettel was best of the rest with the third-fastest time.

There were a few spots of rain before the second session got underway, and despite some fears of further showers, conditions steadily improved over the course of the 90 minutes’ running.

After being surprisingly pipped to top spot by Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari in the first session, normal service resumed with yet another Mercedes 1-2. The pair took turns at the top of the timesheets before Hamilton’s best lap on the Super Soft Pirelli tyres ended the debate; Vettel was just under three-tenths slower than Rosberg, while the Ferraris of Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso ran in close company to round out the top five.

The Williams pairing of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas were next up, and the final runners to lap within the 1m16s range. The McLarens of Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button looked better suited to this circuit and finished eighth and ninth-fastest respectively, while Jean-Éric Vergne rounded out the top ten in his Toro Rosso depsite a last-minute slide up the Turn 4 escape road.

Three surprising absentees from the top half of the timesheets were the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo and the two Force Indias of Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez, who occupied positions 12 to 14 on the timing screens at the end of the session.

The session features dramas for other runners too. Marcus Ericsson had an ‘off’ in his Caterham and ended his on-track program barely thirty minutes in, while teammate Kamui Kobayashi had a harmless spin at Turn 2 just five minutes into his first hit-out of the weekend. Kimi Räikkönen also looped his Ferrari at the exit of Turn 10 but was able to get going.

Daniil Kvyat and Jules Bianchi had their running limited by technical issues.

Sunday’s final practice session kicks off at 1o:00am local time (GMT -4).
