Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has mixed feelings after qualifying in fourth place for today’s Austrian Grand Prix at Spielberg.

The Spaniard got the best out of his troubled F14T and equalled his and team’s season best of qualifying fourth since the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

Alonso believes that qualifying was very unusual “I have mixed feelings after this qualifying, because on the one hand, this is the best result since early in the season,” the double world champion told press.

“But it’s also true that the session was very unusual and it’s highly likely that the final order does not reflect the true hierarchy down the field” he said.

Alonso is one of four drivers to have raced at the Red Bull Ring back in 2003 – then named the A1-Ring – driving for Renault.Motor Racing - Formula One World Championship - Canadian Grand Prix - Race Day - Montreal, Canada

Reflecting on qualifying, the Spaniard spoke of his mistake in Q2 where he ran off the track in a Rallycross manner, but still managed to take second place temporarily and was happy that qualifying on the second row of the grid made up for not doing a perfect lap.

He believes that the updates the team brought to Austria show a clear direction that the Scuderia are on the right path forward.

“Fourth place makes up for the disappointment of not having done a perfect lap and it should make us proud of what we have accomplished so far, because the updates we started bringing since Canada seem to indicate we are on the right road.”

With faster rivals behind him, Alonso expects this 71 lap race to be very tough and says defending is going to be as important as attacking others for position and hopes they can find the right strategy for the race.

“With some faster cars behind us, we can expect a difficult race, in which defending will be as important as attacking.

Now we must try and work out how to make the most of this advantage for as long as possible in terms of strategy and to have a solid race.”
