Sebastian Vettel headed a Red Bull one-two in the final practice session at Silverstone, where rain dictated the running of the drivers.

All drivers brave enough to explore the slippery surface of Silverstone had to fight constant snaps of oversteer, as the high amount of torque made grip hard to come by.

After dominating most sessions last season, this was the first time Vettel finished a session on top this year.

Both Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg attempted a couple of flying laps and were up on times in the first two sectors, but they returned to the garage after each lap; possibly to prevent potential damage that a wet track can bring.

Hamilton was on course to set the fastest time in the second half of the session, until the slippery conditions caught him out and sent him off the track.

Fernando Alonso was the only other driver not to set a lap time, however he too managed to get in four untimed laps.

There were encouraging signs in the Lotus garage as they finished the session behind the Red Bulls, with Pastor Maldonado third and Romain Grosjean in fourth.

The team was due for an uninterrupted session; however this almost didn’t happen as Grosjean spun his E22 on the exit of Club and narrowly missed the wall.

Unfortunately for Marussia’s Jules Bianchi he wasn’t so lucky. Bianchi was caught out pushing the car on a track that was only getting wetter and out-braked himself into Stowe. He hit the wall causing front wing damage and ending his session.

To make matters worse for Marussia Max Chilton was only able to complete his installation lap before he encountered a gearbox problem. The team ended up having to chance the gearbox which will see Chilton drop five places for tomorrow’s race.

Daniil Kvyat and Valtteri Bottas were both noteworthy for their pace on the wet tyres. Both placed their cars in the top 10 finishing in sixth and ninth place respectively.
